Amazon Integrates Alexa+ into New AI Shopping Assistant

Amazon has launched a new personalized AI shopping assistant powered by its Alexa+ technology, replacing the previous Rufus assistant. The feature, available on the Amazon app, website, and Echo devices, offers a conversational shopping experience with tailored recommendations and the ability to automate tasks.

Amazon is deepening its push to make AI the default layer of online shopping, turning Alexa from a voice helper into an automated purchasing agent tightly embedded in Amazon’s storefronts.

Early experiments and Rufus era (2024–2025)

Amazon’s first big generative AI experiment for shopping came with Rufus, an assistant launched in 2024 to help customers “discover and compare products.” By 2025, Rufus had been used by more than 300 million customers, demonstrating strong demand for conversational shopping tools that could answer questions and guide choices inside Amazon’s marketplace.

May 13, 2026: Alexa+ takes over the shopping journey

On May 13, 2026, Amazon formally replaced Rufus with “Alexa for Shopping,” a new AI assistant powered by its upgraded Alexa+ technology. The tool is built directly into the main Amazon search bar and a dedicated chat window, so users can ask anything from skincare advice to when they last ordered batteries and receive tailored answers and buying guides.

Axios described the shift as Amazon pushing “Alexa toward automated shopping,” with the company leaning into “agentic” tools that can track prices, remember preferences and eventually make purchases on a customer’s behalf. Features such as Auto-Buy trigger purchases once a target price is hit, while Scheduled Actions can pre-fill carts or surface recommendations for review before checkout.

Cross-device integration and broader reach

Alexa for Shopping is rolling out to U.S. customers across the Amazon app, Amazon.com, and Echo devices, without requiring a Prime membership or Echo hardware. The Verge captured the broader shift with the headline “Alexa is moving into Amazon.com,” underscoring that conversational AI is now embedded directly into the core shopping interface rather than living in a separate chatbot.

On Echo Show devices, Amazon is redesigning the shopping interface to mirror the app and website, letting users browse, compare, and buy by voice or touch. TechCrunch notes that the assistant can also shop “other online stores” via a “Buy for Me” feature, a convenience that raises new questions about AI autonomy and privacy as Alexa+ becomes more capable and more personal over time.
