A routine ground test of Blue Origin’s New Glenn heavy‑lift rocket in Florida rapidly turned into a crisis for the company and for U.S. lunar plans, as a fully fueled booster erupted in a massive fireball that destroyed key launch infrastructure and halted near‑term missions.

On the evening of May 28, Blue Origin was conducting a static fire at Launch Complex 36A (LC‑36A) ahead of an anticipated fourth New Glenn launch carrying Amazon’s Kuiper internet satellites when the rocket exploded on the pad. Observers described it as “one of the largest rocket explosions in U.S. history” and the company’s worst failure to date. Video from the Space Coast showed a methane‑fueled first stage disintegrating moments after engine ignition, sending debris across nearby scrubland and into the sea.

In the immediate aftermath, Blue Origin reported that all personnel were safe and referred to the event only as an “anomaly,” while founder Jeff Bezos vowed to “rebuild whatever needs rebuilding and get back to flying.” The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed it was aware of the incident and said there was “no impact to air traffic.”

As damage assessments began on May 29, multiple sources confirmed significant destruction at LC‑36A, a site into which Blue Origin had poured years of work and at least hundreds of millions of dollars. Analysts warned that, with no alternate New Glenn pad yet completed, rebuilding or finishing a new site would likely take at least a year, with 15 months a “best case” estimate. The timing is especially sensitive: New Glenn was expected to play “a starring role” in NASA’s Artemis lunar program and to launch Amazon’s satellite constellation, meaning the loss reverberates across government and commercial customers.

In early June, NASA and industry veterans drew parallels to SpaceX’s 2016 AMOS‑6 pad explosion, recalling how that disaster forced more than a year of pad repairs and a painstaking debris hunt before Falcon 9 flights resumed. Elon Musk, amplifying an old reflection on SpaceX’s early years, resurfaced the reminder that “rockets are hard,” underscoring how even experienced launch providers endure catastrophic failures.

Blue Origin leadership, however, is signaling a far faster recovery. After a preliminary survey, CEO Dave Limp said the propellant farm and major tanks at LC‑36A “are all in good shape” and confirmed plans to rebuild the pad while moving to an alternative vertical integration concept that eliminates the destroyed transporter‑erector. He pledged that New Glenn “will fly again before the end of this year,” an aggressive roughly six‑month return‑to‑flight goal that outside experts view as highly optimistic.

The divergence between Blue Origin’s ambitious timetable and external estimates of a 12–18‑month rebuild highlights the core tension now facing U.S. space planners. Until New Glenn returns, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy effectively remain the country’s only operational medium‑ and heavy‑lift options, concentrating risk in a single launch provider even as Artemis and commercial satellite demand continue to grow.
