Reddit says AI summaries are starving the web just as investors start to believe it

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman criticized Google's AI Overviews, arguing they fail to provide value to the web ecosystem and have led to "choppy" search engine traffic for Reddit. His comments came as Reddit's stock fell despite strong earnings, with investors concerned about the long-term impact of AI summaries on referral traffic.

Reddit’s latest earnings should have been a victory lap. Instead, they turned into a sharper question about whether Google’s AI search tools are quietly squeezing the very websites that helped build the modern web.

The numbers, on paper, looked strong: revenue jumped, profit surged, and guidance beat expectations. But investors fixated on something less comforting — Reddit’s dependence on search traffic, and what happens when Google answers users directly instead of sending them out to Reddit. That helps explain why Reddit’s stock fell even after a solid quarter.

CEO Steve Huffman’s message was blunt. In his letter to investors, he framed Reddit as a refuge from an internet increasingly clogged with machine-made sludge: “As the internet becomes flooded with synthetic content, people are craving real human perspective.” His bigger point was strategic as much as philosophical: Reddit thinks its value lies in messy, first-hand conversation, not in polished AI digests. “People don’t want a summary of Reddit; they want Reddit.”

That argument doubles as a shot at Google. Huffman said the old search model — “10 blue links” — created broad value across the web, while “AI Overviews has yet to make a similar level of positive impact.” In other words, Reddit is echoing a fear spreading across publishing and commerce: AI summaries may keep users on Google while starving everyone else of traffic.

Still, the tension isn’t simple. Reddit has benefited from Google, including a content licensing deal reportedly worth $60 million, even as it now questions whether that relationship still works. And while Huffman insists “the bigger picture is unchanged: the commercial business is strong,” he also admitted “search referrals were choppy in the quarter.”

That is the real fault line here. Reddit is making money from the AI era, but it is also warning that the same AI shift could erode the open-web traffic model that made companies like Reddit so valuable in the first place.
