Anthropic Turns Claude Into an Office Suite Challenger

Anthropic has merged Claude’s chat and productivity tools into one interface and added Docs and Slides, betting users will prefer an AI workspace that eliminates tab-switching and takes aim at Google and Microsoft.

Anthropic’s latest Claude overhaul begins with a familiar workplace irritation: too many tabs, too many modes, and too much guessing about where a task belongs.

Earlier this year, the company introduced Claude Design for websites and prototypes, then upgraded Cowork’s memory layer to retain context across chats. But the expanding product line created its own friction. Customers were struggling to determine which tab suited which job, Anthropic said, prompting the company to combine chat, Cowork, Artifacts and Design in a single Claude window.

The new interface is meant to make that choice invisible. Rather than send users into a separate workspace, Claude can determine what a request requires and make Cowork and Design capabilities available “from any conversation,” alongside existing context, skills and connectors.

Anthropic is pairing that consolidation with Docs and Slides, now launching in beta. Users can ask Claude to draft and revise documents, leave comments, collaborate with colleagues and share work through a link; documents can also be exported to Google Docs or Microsoft Word. For presentations, Claude can generate and edit slides, present them directly, or export decks as PowerPoint files or PDFs.

The rollout starts with Pro and Max subscribers across web, desktop and mobile, with free and team access planned later. That puts Claude more directly into the daily territory of Google Workspace and Microsoft Office. Google still benefits from having Gemini embedded natively in Docs, Sheets and Slides, even as Anthropic’s models are widely regarded as stronger.

The broader industry is converging on the same proposition: an AI assistant should handle both a quick question and a complex, multi-step assignment. OpenAI has already folded Codex into ChatGPT; Anthropic is now making its own wager that Claude can become less a chatbot than the place where office work gets made, debated and finished.
