Huawei Pulls Its Next AI Chip Forward in a Direct Nvidia Challenge
Huawei says its Ascend 960DT AI chip will arrive in early 2027 rather than later that year, pairing the accelerated schedule with giant computing systems as China presses to narrow its AI hardware gap with Nvidia.
Huawei has moved up the debut of its next-generation Ascend 960DT AI chip to the first quarter of 2027, bringing forward a product it had previously targeted for the third quarter. The announcement, made at the company’s Huawei Connect conference, puts the Chinese technology group on a faster collision course with Nvidia as Washington’s curbs on advanced semiconductor technology continue to reshape the market.
A Huawei spokesperson said the Ascend 960DT was now expected in Q1 2027, with the Ascend 960 line “launching ahead of schedule, doubling performance and advancing year by year.”1 The timing is notable: it came a week before a planned meeting between President Donald Trump and China’s President Xi Jinping in Washington, where technology competition was bound to loom large.
Huawei’s strategy is not confined to a faster chip cycle. It is pitching what it calls the Peerium Computing Architecture, which links processors, memory, storage and networking through its UnifiedBus technology. The aim is to turn vast numbers of domestic AI chips into a single computing resource for both model training and inference. Its Atlas 950 SuperCluster, the company says, can connect as many as 256,000 accelerator cards.1
That ambition reinforces a broader reading of the announcement: Huawei is trying to narrow a gap that still defines the global AI race. A separate report described the new technologies as a challenge to Nvidia and other established leaders, while arguing they signal a narrowing divide between Chinese and US AI capabilities.2
But the accelerated timetable has also invited scrutiny. China tech analyst Rui Ma noted that Huawei had previously outlined an Atlas 960 SuperPoD scaling to 15,488 Ascend 960 chips, whereas the newly announced system referred to 4,096. “The chip itself is coming WAY earlier, but the SuperPoD they announced is much smaller than what they originally laid out,” she wrote.1
For Huawei, the message is acceleration and self-sufficiency. For skeptics, the test is whether its systems can scale as boldly as its roadmap now suggests.
