Google Kills Gemini Gems and Replaces Them With Slash-Command Skills
Google will automatically move Gemini users’ custom Gems into reusable Skills, but the shift trades a simple consumer-facing assistant feature for a more technical, command-driven workflow.
Gems arrived in 2024 as Gemini’s way of letting people build task-specific AI helpers without repeating the same instructions. Google offered pre-made options including a learning coach, career guide, coding partner and editor; users could also create assistants for needs such as fitness, nutrition or travel planning.1
The feature is now headed for retirement. Google says Gems will become Skills on November 17, 2026, with existing creations automatically converted so users do not have to rebuild them. Until then, the company says, Gems will remain available.1 Another report, which first spotted the change through 9to5Google, described it more bluntly: “RIP, Gemini Gems.”2
Google’s case is that Skills preserve the core idea: reusable custom instructions that can be applied across Gemini tasks. The replacement is already becoming available in Gemini chats, with Workspace availability beginning October 5 and the Gemini app rollout following on October 13, according to one report.3
But the interface marks a real change in emphasis. Instead of simply selecting a personalised assistant, users will invoke a Skill by typing a forward slash in a task thread and choosing it from the resulting menu.1 That may suit power users accustomed to command-style tools, yet it is less immediately intuitive than the consumer-friendly promise behind Gems.
The shutdown timetable also extends beyond the November switchover: Gems are expected to disappear in November for individual users, while Workspace users could retain them until as early as March 1, 2027.3 Google is preserving the instructions, but changing the experience—and asking Gemini users to learn a more technical vocabulary in the process.
