Apple’s Smart-Home Gamble Finally Has a Date
Apple’s October 13 “Welcome home” event is expected to unveil a smart display hub and refreshed home hardware. The real test is whether its newly launched AI-powered Siri can make a delayed smart-home strategy feel coherent.
Apple has scheduled a New York launch event for October 13 at 9 a.m. ET under the tagline “Welcome home,” putting a long-rumoured smart-home expansion on the calendar.1
The immediate expectation is a hardware refresh. Reports point to a new display-equipped smart-home hub, an updated Apple TV and a refreshed HomePod Mini; Apple is also reportedly working with LG on accessories including a video doorbell, thermostat and indoor camera.1
The hub would mark a more direct bid for the centre of the home. Rather than leaving users to manage devices primarily through the Home app, Apple is expected to introduce a roughly 6-inch touchscreen unit that can sit on a counter or mount to a wall. It may use voice or facial recognition to surface an individual user’s contacts and calendar, though reports say it would not offer an iPad-style App Store.2
That ambition has been delayed before. Apple had reportedly aimed to launch the hub in 2025, but held it back as its upgraded, AI-powered Siri slipped. Siri AI arrived last month with a beta label, clearing the way, according to one report, for “Apple’s next big push for the smart home.”1
The event therefore carries two messages. The expected Apple TV, HomePod and partner products suggest Apple wants a fuller hardware ecosystem; the display hub suggests it wants a single, visible control point. But Siri remains the crucial connective tissue. A screen and new accessories can broaden Apple’s home lineup. Making them feel less fragmented will depend on whether the delayed assistant is ready for the job.
