Musk’s $10.5 Billion SpaceX Giveaway Is Headed for Trump Accounts
Elon Musk says every American child will receive a SpaceX share next year, a pledge now being routed through Trump Accounts. The plan is worth an estimated $10.5 billion, but its mechanics remain unclear.
Musk’s pledge emerged after Anthropic said Sunday it would commit 5% of its shares to a new public-benefit fund. The AI company said the fund could support major donations, direct distributions to specific groups, or efforts addressing AI-driven job disruption.1
Musk answered with a competing philosophy: “I recommend giving the shares directly to the public.”
2 On Monday, he said he would give one SpaceX share to “every kid in America” next year, adding: “This will be the first of many.”3
The arithmetic makes the announcement enormous. With roughly 72 million children under 18 in the United States and SpaceX shares closing at $146.03 on Friday, the giveaway would be worth about $10.5 billion. Musk owns about 4.8 billion shares, according to an August SEC filing, but offered no details on eligibility, transfers, taxes or the mechanism for issuing the stock.3
By later Monday, the White House and President Donald Trump had supplied a political wrapper: the shares would be distributed through Trump Accounts, the tax-advantaged accounts created for children. The White House said 60 million accounts were automatically opened in October, with more than 70 million created in total.4
Trump hailed Musk’s “incredible generosity” in bringing SpaceX stock to millions of children through the accounts, casting the pledge as the private-sector partnership the program was designed to attract.
5 Musk amplified that message, while also spotlighting a celebratory post tying the giveaway to SpaceX’s latest Falcon 9 launch.

The core promise is clear: a share for every child. The operational details—and whether the headline value survives the fine print—are not.
