Apple’s $2,000 Foldable Faces Its First Hinge Crisis
Early iPhone Duo owners report inner screens cracking within hours, often after resistance at the hinge. Apple says only a small number are affected, while teardown analysts point to a possible mechanical weak spot.
The iPhone Duo’s launch-day promise — Apple’s first foldable for $2,000 — quickly collided with reports of inner displays failing after only a handful of openings. Photos and videos showed a strikingly similar pattern: damage along the hinge, followed by bright lines spreading across the right side of the OLED panel.1
One Australian owner said the phone had been opened fewer than 20 times when they felt something beneath the internal hinge. “As I continued opening it, I heard an audible crack, and the screen broke right along the hinge,” the customer wrote, adding that an Apple Store replaced the device immediately.1
As more complaints surfaced, the shared detail was not ordinary screen damage but resistance in the fold itself. Some owners reported a click or snag just before the display failed; others said the defect appeared within a day, or even during setup. The resulting damage looks consistent with a stressed OLED matrix, whose repair could reportedly cost roughly half the price of the phone.2
Teardown analysts then focused on the hinge. iFixit’s scans suggested the apparent failure point sits below the ribbon cable, where the supporting mechanism narrows. Its theory: a support bar may stick and fail to leave enough room for the display’s bend, placing damaging pressure on the panel.2 YouTuber CuriousHagi reached a similar, though separate, conclusion after durability testing: a thinner central hinge link appeared to snap at a notch, with marks suggesting contact with the support plate.3
Apple has now acknowledged “an issue impacting the inner display” on a “small number of iPhone Duo units” and told affected customers to contact AppleCare for a replacement.4 The company says most devices are not susceptible and that defects appear quickly — a reassurance that leaves the key question unresolved: whether this is a limited batch problem or a weakness built into Apple’s first foldable hinge.
