Amazon Gives Alexa a Bigger Role in Your Holiday Shopping
Amazon has added more than 100 shopping tools to Alexa, expanding the assistant’s role from list-making to subscription changes, delivery updates and payment support ahead of the holidays.
Ahead of the holiday shopping season, Amazon has expanded Alexa with more than 100 shopping-related capabilities, pushing the voice assistant further into the unglamorous but consequential work of managing purchases after customers hit “buy.”1
The rollout starts with shopping lists. Users can ask Alexa to create, register, review and edit lists — a familiar function, but now positioned as part of a broader effort to make the assistant a more active retail concierge. Alexa can also handle recurring subscriptions: a customer could, for example, change an item’s delivery schedule from monthly to once every three months.1
Amazon is extending that control to the last mile and the customer-service queue. Shoppers can update an address or add drop-off instructions, while Alexa can answer questions about Prime and Audible memberships, billing and payment problems.1
The timing is hardly accidental. Amazon has spent the year layering AI into shopping, including an assistant for product discovery and alerts for new products and offers. The company says use of its agentic features has grown eightfold since the start of the year, while more than 400 million consumers used Alexa for shopping over the past 12 months.1
That framing makes the update more than a convenience feature. Amazon’s pitch is that Alexa can reduce the friction around routine shopping tasks; its business incentive is equally clear: keep customers inside Amazon’s retail ecosystem from the first list item to the final delivery instruction.
