Anthropic’s $17 Billion Quarter Comes With an $895 Billion Bill
Anthropic’s amended IPO filing shows Claude revenue accelerating at extraordinary speed, but the company’s infrastructure commitments and reported losses are rising just as fast. The central question for investors is whether growth can outrun the cost of compute.
Anthropic began its IPO push last week with financial disclosures that covered only the first half of the year. Its amended S-1, filed Monday, filled in the crucial third-quarter picture — a period that investors are scrutinising because AI economics can change with startling speed.1
The growth case is hard to miss. Anthropic reported about $17 billion in third-quarter revenue, up from $11.6 billion in the prior quarter and more than 12-fold from a year earlier. Revenue for the first nine months reached $33.24 billion, roughly 1,200% above the comparable period a year earlier.2 For supporters, the figures show that enterprise demand for Claude is arriving at a scale few software businesses can match.
But the revised filing also puts a price tag on that momentum. Anthropic disclosed $895.4 billion in purchase commitments and lease agreements, “substantially all” tied to compute and infrastructure. Nearly $70 billion falls due in the 12 months after Sept. 30, while roughly $447.5 billion is expected by the end of 2030.3
The costs are already cutting into the numbers. Anthropic swung from $974 million in operating income in the second quarter to a $567 million operating loss in the third, saying the reversal was “primarily driven by $5.0 billion of compute under short-term commitments.” Compute and infrastructure charges climbed to $9.9 billion, four times their level a year earlier.4
The headline $23.29 billion quarterly net loss — and $104 billion loss for the first nine months — is complicated by non-cash accounting charges, including liabilities tied to convertible notes. Still, the broader warning is plain: even a potentially record-setting IPO may not fully finance the infrastructure race. Anthropic had $146.6 billion in cash and accessible investments at quarter-end, but investors must decide whether revenue can keep pace with commitments stretching through 2045.1
