Spotify to Launch AI-Generated Podcasts and Briefings
Spotify announced new AI-powered features, including an app called Studio by Spotify Labs, which will create personalized daily podcasts and briefings for users based on prompts. The platform is also introducing an AI Q&A feature for users to ask questions about podcast content.
Spotify is accelerating its push into AI-generated audio, betting that personalized, machine-made podcasts and briefings will keep users more deeply engaged with its platform.
Early May: Experimenting with personal AI podcasts
Earlier this month, Spotify quietly tested tools that let users generate podcasts from prompts instead of relying solely on human-made shows. A GitHub-based command-line tool for AI coding assistants allowed people to “create a podcast and save it to their own Spotify library,” with options to schedule daily or weekly briefs and even upload links, PDFs, and text while choosing a custom voice.1
May 21: New AI Q&A and personal briefings
On May 21, Spotify formally unveiled a wave of AI features focused on user-generated audio. The company “adds AI-powered Q&A and briefing generation features to podcasts,” enabling Premium users in select markets to ask questions about the episode they’re listening to or concepts mentioned in it, and to get tailored recommendations inside the app.1
The same day, Spotify announced Studio by Spotify Labs, a standalone desktop app that “generates a daily briefing, podcasts, and playlists on your PC using chatbot prompts,” drawing on listening history plus connected services like email and calendars.2 The AI can “take action on your behalf,” including researching topics and organizing information, with generated briefings saved back to a user’s Spotify library.2
Coming weeks: Personal Podcasts in the main app
Within the main Spotify app, a new Personal Podcasts feature will “generate AI episodes based on users’ prompts,” turning requests like “Help me understand economics in five minutes” into private, on-demand shows.1
May 22: Growing concerns over an AI-heavy Spotify
By May 22, critics framed this expansion as part of a broader shift: “Spotify's AI bet: more of everything, less of what you want.”3 As AI tools for music, podcasts, and audiobooks proliferate, observers warn that a once music-focused app is rapidly morphing into a dense AI content factory, raising questions about discovery, labeling, and whether human creators will be pushed further into the background.
