Coinbase Unveils AI Agent for Autonomous Crypto Trading

Coinbase has launched an AI agent that can autonomously execute cryptocurrency trades and pay for premium research on behalf of users. The tool integrates with user accounts and utilizes the x402 payment protocol, allowing it to pay for services without requiring user logins.

Coinbase is pushing deeper into “agentic” finance with a new AI agent that can autonomously trade cryptocurrencies and pay for research, intensifying a race among fintechs to automate investing.

Early foundations and protocol build‑out

Coinbase’s latest launch builds on years of work to let software agents hold and move money on users’ behalf. The company previously introduced tools like AgentKit to help developers embed automated wallets into applications, laying groundwork for more autonomous financial agents.

A key piece of that infrastructure is x402, an open payment protocol Coinbase rolled out with partners including AWS, Anthropic, Circle, and Near. The protocol has already processed 75 million transactions and $24 million in volume over the past 30 days, signaling growing adoption for machine-to-machine and agent-based payments.

Launch of the autonomous trading agent

On June 11, Coinbase unveiled an AI agent that “can execute crypto trades and pay for premium research data on behalf of users.” The tool connects directly to a user’s main Coinbase account or a separate sandbox environment, and can trade spot crypto and derivatives, with support for equities and prediction markets planned next.

The agent can rebalance portfolios, follow an investment thesis over time, or give one-off advice on specific trades, tapping Coinbase Advanced for analysis and execution. Custom limits for trade size, spending, and service access are expected soon, aiming to keep autonomy within user-defined guardrails.

Payment and AI assistant integration

Where Coinbase claims a competitive edge is the payments layer. Using x402, the agent can buy premium research APIs and on-demand compute “without requiring any login or subscription,” turning access to data and tools into on-demand, per-use payments.,

The agent also plugs into AI assistants: it “works inside ChatGPT and Claude through Coinbase’s MCP server,” so users can ask a chatbot to make a trade that’s executed through Coinbase without leaving the conversation.

Industry race and emerging concerns

Coinbase’s move comes just days after Robinhood introduced its own AI trading agents, underscoring an industry-wide sprint toward autonomous finance tools. Payments giant Visa has invested in Replit to power agentic payments and signed a deal with OpenAI to explore similar products, while the Financial Stability Board is urging “stronger safeguards” around AI in financial services.

Coinbase’s head of AI product, Lincoln Murr, argues the company is “aiming to build a fundamentally different product for a future where most of the internet is accessed through agents,” combining an exchange with a native payments protocol in one stack.
