Meta is rolling out a new “Incognito Chat” mode for its AI assistant, promising private, encrypted conversations at a moment when tech platforms are under pressure over how they handle user data.

Early groundwork for private AI on WhatsApp

Over the past year, Meta has been building a “private processing” infrastructure for WhatsApp, designed to support AI features without breaking end-to-end encryption.¹ That work underpins a new incognito mode inside WhatsApp’s Meta AI chatbot, announced on May 13, 2026. Meta says these incognito conversations “are not saved, and messages will disappear by default once you close the chat,” with the session ending if you close the app or lock your phone, causing Meta AI to lose the context of that conversation.¹

Alice Newton-Rex, VP of Product at WhatsApp, framed the move as a response to how people are already using AI: “People are starting to use AI for everything, including some of their most private thoughts… We think it’s really important to give people the ability to ask these questions as privately as possible.”¹

Zuckerberg’s pitch: no logs, end-to-end encrypted

On the same day, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled Incognito Chat more broadly as “the first major AI product where there is no log of your conversations stored on servers.”² Unlike other services’ “temporary” or “incognito” modes, Meta says its version also uses end-to-end encryption so “no one — not even Meta — can read your conversations.”²

The company contrasted this with rivals: Google keeps data from temporary Gemini chats for up to 72 hours, while ChatGPT and Claude store incognito or temporary chats for at least 30 days.² Lawsuits have already turned AI chat logs into evidence, from mass shooting cases in Canada and Florida to litigation against Google over instructions allegedly given by Gemini.²

Competitive privacy narrative

As Meta leans into encryption for AI chats, competitors are staging their own privacy narratives. Meta’s Incognito Chat will roll out over the coming months in WhatsApp and the standalone Meta AI app, alongside upcoming features like “Side Chat” that invoke AI privately inside group conversations.¹²
