Agree! was talking about this with @havoyan just a few days ago. That's also the reason why so much of the value has been accruing to the frontier models in my opinion (cc @GavinSBaker) because if you don't have the mental load to pick/change models, you'll just default to the one that has been marketed as "frontier" even if it's not the best trade-off for the majority of things you're doing with it (ex you can get cheaper more efficient models on telling you the weather, classifying, question answering,...)

1 in 3 AI teams ran an open-weights model in April 2026, up from 1 in 5 nine months ago.

The overall number of teams using open weights grew 3x.

We’re seeing newer users choose open models at a higher rate than those who came before.

Automatic behind the scene routing in user interfaces (instead of model picker) will redistribute value capture and usage towards many more models than just frontier ones (especially towards open-source/smaller/cheaper ones). Because it removes the cognitive load for the final user to have to switch models (which is too high leading to defaulting to frontier for all calls with model picker) cc @antonosika @bgurley

Using open models and inference clouds (which serve open models) is a leading indicator of what is to come.

The advantage of open weights is that you can train, serve, and continually improve your own model. You get control over cost, quality, latency, deployment options, etc.

It's just a matter of time before every company does this for their most important AI workloads.

Harvey just published a study showing a hybrid setup, open source GLM 5.1 as primary worker, routing to Opus 4.7 only when needed beats pure Opus 4.7 on quality and costs less.

This is the multi-model routing thesis proved in production on one of the hardest benchmarks in enterprise AI.

The insight isn’t that open source beat frontier. It’s that smart routing beat brute force. Using the most expensive model for every task is not a quality strategy. It’s a laziness tax. The teams building routing layers that send each task to the right model at the right cost are now demonstrably ahead on both dimensions simultaneously.

Inference optimization just became a first-class competitive advantage. Legal proved it first because the stakes forced the discipline.

Great to see AI maturing and finally adopting what we've been preaching for a while now: multi-model workloads!

It will go even further progressively though with most companies not only using dozens of models but also adapting them, post-training them, optimizing them for their specific use-cases and constraints.

Ultimately there will be as many models as code repositories because models are the new code!

Narrative violation: according to @Stanford research, local models can answer 71.3% of real-world chat and reasoning queries accurately, up from 23.2% in 2023. Obviously at a fraction of the cost and energy consumption of frontier APIs.

The obvious conclusion: you don't need a frontier model for most tasks. The future is multi-model: local, open-source, smaller and cheaper for the majority of workloads, frontier APIs when no other choices!
