Anthropic Launches 'Claude Tag' AI Assistant for Slack

Anthropic has launched Claude Tag, an "always-on" AI agent designed to act as a persistent teammate within Slack. The feature, available to enterprise customers, can be tagged in channels to perform tasks, summarize conversations, and learn from a team's ongoing work to provide proactive assistance.

Anthropic’s new “Claude Tag” assistant is turning Slack channels into shared workspaces for humans and AI—while also exposing strategic tensions for Slack owner Salesforce.

Launch: Claude joins the Slack team

On June 23, Anthropic unveiled Claude Tag as “a new way for teams to work with Claude,” starting on Slack, where the AI “can join as a team member.” Once given access to selected channels and tools, anyone can tag @Claude and delegate tasks while they focus on other work.

Tech outlets described it as an “always-on AI teammate that lives in your Slack channels,” able to follow conversations, learn context, and proactively flag updates and tasks. Another report noted that Claude can “write and merge pull requests, locate sales numbers, analyze data, take on tasks delegated to it, and more,” all triggered by tagging @Claude.

Anthropic says Claude builds long-lived memory from the channels it inhabits and can plan future work, with internal metrics claiming that 65% of its product team’s code is already created by its own Claude Tag instance. TechCrunch framed this as an effort to capture “organizational context, institutional knowledge, and enterprise workflows” by having Claude “learn your company, one Slack message at a time.”

Industry reaction: new paradigm vs. build-your-own

Outside Anthropic, AI researcher Andrej Karpathy called Claude Tag “a new paradigm for interacting with Claude” that is much more “inline” with everyday organizational activity once the underlying integrations and memory are wired up.

Others see it as part of a broader agent trend. Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue amplified a view that building an internal Slack agent is “quite simple” and can be fully customized to a company’s own stack and models, suggesting some enterprises may prefer bespoke bots over off‑the‑shelf agents like Claude Tag.

Salesforce tension: platform openness vs. product overlap

Five days after launch, coverage turned to Salesforce, which owns Slack. Anthropic’s agent runs alongside Salesforce’s own Slackbot and Agentforce tools—products Salesforce has heavily invested in, including more than 30 AI features unveiled in March that themselves run on Anthropic’s Claude.

Yet Salesforce publicly promoted Claude Tag, leaving some staff “confused about why the company is promoting a competitor inside Slack.” Analysts say this creates an “awkward positioning problem” for customers now choosing between Slackbot, Agentforce, and Claude Tag within the same workspace.

Salesforce’s model-agnostic, open-platform strategy—and its financial stake in Anthropic—help explain the move, but internal friction over product boundaries underscores how agentic AI is reshaping both collaboration tools and the business models behind them.
