Nvidia’s Jensen Huang is trying to slam the brakes on AI panic — just as other tech leaders are flooring the gas on doom. In a week dominated by warnings about automation, unemployment, and even human extinction, the world’s most valuable chipmaker’s CEO is selling a very different story: AI as a massive jobs engine, not a jobs apocalypse.

Early warnings, rising anxieties

For months, high‑profile AI figures have been sounding alarms about what’s coming. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has suggested AI could replace “50% of entry-level white-collar jobs in the coming years,” a sound bite now circulating as a shorthand for white‑collar precarity. Elon Musk has gone much further, musing about a “20% chance of annihilation” from AI on Joe Rogan’s podcast — a made‑for‑headlines estimate that slots neatly into the “AI ends humanity” narrative.

These dire forecasts have landed in an economy already rattled by automation scares, offshoring, and stagnant wages. So when generative AI exploded into mainstream use, the narrative almost wrote itself: this time, maybe the robots really do come for the desk jobs.

Against that backdrop, worker anxiety has been rising. As one TechCrunch piece framed it, “as workers worry about AI,” Huang is being asked to answer not just as a vendor of the picks and shovels of this boom, but as one of its chief beneficiaries and architects.

Huang enters the chat: AI as job creator

On May 2, during the "Memos to the President" podcast, Huang fired a shot across the bow of the doom camp. He said AI leaders should "be mindful" about how they talk about the technology’s impact, and he dismissed the prevailing mood of gloom from within the industry as unhelpful “doomerism.” He argued that such rhetoric is “ridiculous” and insisted executives “have to be careful and really ground ourselves to talking about the facts.”

Huang’s central thesis is blunt: “AI creates jobs,” he said days later during a May 4 conversation at the Milken Institute with MSNBC’s Becky Quick, doubling down on his optimism. Far from a destroyer of livelihoods, he cast AI as “the United States’ best opportunity to re-industrialize” — a phrase that neatly fuses Silicon Valley boosterism with Rust Belt nostalgia.

The logic is straightforward and self‑interested in equal measure. Nvidia’s GPUs are the backbone of the AI boom, and Huang emphasized that the industry is powered by “a new breed of industrial factories” — facilities that manufacture the critical hardware that underpins modern AI systems. Tasks vs. jobs: Huang’s economic argument

AI luminaries have repeatedly warned that AI will “permeate across radiology” and potentially wipe out radiologist jobs. But in a viral framing picked up on social media, supporters of Huang’s view say this kind of messaging is itself destructive: “If an AI scientist warns people that AI is going to permeate across radiology and radiologists are going to get wiped out, it might seem helpful but it's hurtful. If we convince everybody not to be radiologists…”

That line — from a tweet amplified by Meta’s chief AI scientist Yann LeCun — captures Huang’s argument in miniature: irresponsible rhetoric can hollow out professions long before any actual automation does.

The allies: LeCun and the anti‑doom camp

Huang isn’t alone. LeCun, one of deep learning’s founding figures, publicly boosted commentary praising Huang as “one [of] the smartest and most far seeing folks [in] the world,” highlighting precisely this concern about fear‑mongering in fields like radiology.

This anti‑doom coalition doesn’t deny AI’s disruptive power; it disputes the narrative that disruption equals catastrophe. Where Amodei and Musk lean into speculative downside risk, Huang and LeCun emphasize present‑day benefits and the dangers of self‑fulfilling pessimism.

The skeptics: conflict of interest and unknowns

Of course, it’s not hard to see why some observers eye Huang’s optimism with suspicion. Nvidia is selling the shovels in the AI gold rush. Every data center buildout, every new model, every corporate “AI transformation” is a direct boost to its bottom line.

Critics can fairly ask: when the CEO of the primary chip supplier to the AI boom says AI will create “an enormous number of jobs,” is that sober economic analysis — or motivated PR?

On one side: AI as an unprecedented risk to jobs and maybe to civilization itself, demanding emergency‑style regulation and radical rethinking of the social contract.
