Google Overhauls Search to Prioritize AI Agents and Answers

During its I/O conference, Google announced a fundamental transformation of its search engine, shifting from a keyword-based system to an AI-first interface. The new experience will feature "information agents" and a "generative UI" to provide direct answers and interactive tools, a move that could significantly alter how users find information online.

Google is dismantling the familiar “ten blue links” model of search and replacing it with AI agents and conversational answers, a shift that could redefine how billions of people reach information online.

From static box to “intelligent” interface

For 25 years, Google Search centered on a blank white box that asked users to compress questions into a few keywords. At its I/O 2026 developer conference on Monday, Google declared that era over, unveiling an “intelligent search box” powered by its Gemini 3.5 Flash model.

The new input field accepts text, images, files, video, and even open Chrome tabs, then drops users into AI-generated interactive experiences instead of traditional link lists. Liz Reid, Google’s head of Search, called it “the biggest upgrade to our iconic search box since its debut over 25 years ago.”

Rise of information agents

Central to the overhaul are “information agents” that monitor the web continuously for changes in news, shopping, finance, and more, alerting users when something relevant happens — a kind of Google Alerts rebuilt with modern language models. Axios described the move as Google “reinvent[ing] search before AI rivals replace it,” noting the existential threat from standalone AI chatbots.

Google DeepMind chief Demis Hassabis framed it as an evolution: “Agents in search is the next step,” he said, emphasizing that the company can deploy such technologies “into multibillion-dollar products.”

Strategic shift and broader AI push

The rollout follows a year of rapid expansion of AI features like AI Overviews and AI Mode, which already serve billions of users monthly. CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted Gemini 3.5 Flash’s “agentic capabilities,” calling the intelligent search box Google’s “biggest upgrade in 25 years” and touting new background “information agents.”

Analysts see the transformation as both a defensive move to keep users from migrating to rival chatbots and a bet that conversational, AI-first interfaces will become the new “lobby of the internet,” replacing the simple search box that dominated for nearly three decades.
