China’s humanoid robot Olympics opened with a tantalising contradiction: machines appeared to outrun the fastest human in history, yet several could not stop safely at the finish line.
On Saturday, the five-day World Humanoid Robot Games began in Beijing with Olympic-style events meant to showcase China’s push for leadership in embodied AI. Chinese state-media reports said Honor’s humanoid robot, Lightning, covered 100 metres in 9.32 seconds during a test run — faster than Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second world record. The event also featured preliminary 100m and 400m races, seven-a-side robot football and demonstrations of other disciplines.1
But the spectacle quickly supplied a harsher measure of the technology. A padded blue wall stood at the end of the track because stopping remained a problem; several robots struck it violently, with some losing limbs. In one run, a robot briefly caught fire before being extinguished, while stretcher teams carried damaged competitors away.2
The Games’ supporters can point to expanding ambition: more than 2,000 robots are expected across five days, with tug-of-war, weightlifting, tennis and martial arts added to the programme. Yet the same display illustrated the gap between eye-catching athletic demonstrations and dependable machines for workplaces or homes. The industry has attracted intense investment in China and the US, but widespread real-world deployment is still constrained by limitations in underlying AI systems.2
Elon Musk amplified the contrast in reposting the Lightning result: the robot ran 100m in 9.32 seconds, he noted, while its crash into a safety wall was “perhaps more impressively” survived without its waist imploding or sparks flying.

For Beijing, the races were a display of speed and industrial confidence. For the robots, the padded wall was a reminder that raw pace is not the same thing as control.
