Stripe built its business on moving money. Its reported purchase of OpenRouter suggests it now wants a strategic position in another fast-growing flow: the tokens powering AI applications.

The deal emerged Wednesday, when Stripe confirmed it was buying the AI-model routing startup. One report framed the transaction at $8 billion, underscoring how quickly OpenRouter has become a prized piece of AI infrastructure.¹

Other reporting put the price at $7.5 billion, a dramatic leap from OpenRouter’s $1.3 billion valuation in May. Stripe was said to have beaten interest from Databricks; the founders would receive a reported $1.5 billion, while investors would take the remaining $6 billion.²

On its face, the purchase is an unusual one for a payments company. OpenRouter helps developers route prompts across AI models and manage their usage. Stripe’s founders reportedly joked in a leaked investor letter that Jan. 1 marked the start of “the singularity,” but the commercial argument is more grounded: AI companies are proliferating, and many already use Stripe.²

The overlap is obvious. “OpenRouter is exceptionally useful for any developer and Stripe is one of the world’s largest developer platforms,” the founders wrote.² OpenRouter, meanwhile, said its “product, mission, and current commitments remain unchanged,” signalling that it expects to keep operating independently after closing.²

The larger contest is over control of AI spending. PitchBook analyst Franco Granda called the acquisition “Stripe’s deliberate attempt to embed itself into the middle of capital flows in the AI era.”² Databricks, Rippling and Ramp are also building tools to monitor AI costs, but Stripe is bringing payment rails, developer reach and a major model gateway under one roof.

That does not make Stripe an AI lab. It could, however, make it a powerful broker between developers, frontier-model providers and the cloud companies supplying the compute.²
