The buildup had already caught the internet’s attention. Elon Musk reposted footage and a claim that Honor’s “Lightning” humanoid ran 100 meters in 9.32 seconds—faster than Bolt’s 9.58-second world record—and highlighted that it survived a collision with a safety wall.

On Tuesday, a Chinese humanoid clocked 8.86 seconds in the 100 meters at Beijing’s World Humanoid Robot Games, beating both its robot rivals and the fastest recorded human time.2 The result landed at an Olympic-style competition in only its second year, where the race track doubled as a showroom for China’s fast-moving robotics sector amid a deepening technology rivalry with the United States.2
