For days, Ox Alpha was the AI world’s favorite riddle: a free, unusually capable model that had developers testing clues as eagerly as its code. Z.ai has now supplied the answer — and turned a Silicon Valley guessing game into a Chinese internet victory lap.

The model emerged last week on OpenRouter and OpenCode, where users were given broad free access to a system pitched for coding, long-running agent work and production tasks. Its behavior quickly set off competing theories. Some observers saw hints of Z.ai’s earlier GLM models; others floated Microsoft’s MAI family, while Reddit users noted its willingness to address subjects often avoided by Chinese chatbots.

On Wednesday, Z.ai, also known as Zhipu, confirmed that Ox Alpha had been an anonymous preview of GLM-5.3-Flash, designed to collect real-world feedback before release. The company subsequently made the weights available through Hugging Face. It says the multimodal model handles text, images and video and offers a context window of up to 1 million tokens.¹

The reveal vindicated the technical sleuths, but it also sharpened the broader point: Chinese open-weight models are increasingly using global developer platforms to win attention before their names are attached. Early outside praise helped fuel the intrigue; Stripe chief executive Patrick Collison called the model “very impressive.”¹

Then came the announcement’s social-media jolt. A post circulated on X declaring: “Time to reveal! Ox Alpha is Zai’s GLM Flash,” and promising its arrival that night.clem 🤗 (ClementDelangue)² On Weibo, the ownership hashtag drew more than 13 million views in less than 24 hours and climbed into the platform’s top 20 topics. Users celebrated performance and low cost, while some framed the episode as proof that Chinese open-source AI had advanced again in the global developer market.³

The nickname that accompanied the mystery — “Niu Lai,” a reference to a viral Chinese animated-film meme — made the final reveal feel less like a corporate launch than the punchline to a national in-joke.³
