Google’s AI Mode Is Taking the Next Step From Search to Checkout
Google is adding flight alerts, rewards-price comparisons and U.S. hotel booking to AI Mode, making its conversational search tool a more hands-on travel planner while partners retain customer service responsibility.
Google is pushing its AI Mode deeper into the travel transaction, turning a chat-based search tool into a service that can follow fares, weigh loyalty points and usher users toward a hotel checkout.
The shift begins with flight planning. Google said travelers can describe their route and dates in AI Mode, compare current options drawn from more than 300 airlines and travel sites, then ask the tool to monitor a chosen itinerary. The company’s new prompt — “track these flight prices for me” — triggers email alerts when fares move, a feature now available in more than 180 countries.1
At the same time, AI Mode is widening the calculation beyond cash fares. Travelers can ask to see flight and hotel costs in points or miles, including searches tailored to an airline rewards balance. That capability is available globally, positioning Google’s interface as a comparison layer for both conventional and loyalty bookings.1
The more consequential step is hotel booking. In the coming weeks, English-language users in the United States will be able to ask AI Mode for lodging recommendations based on their trip and preferences, review the options, and proceed through a “Continue on Google” flow. They can select a room, check terms such as cancellation policies and pay with Google Pay.1
But Google is not taking full ownership of the trip after checkout. Its integrated hotel chains and travel platforms — including Expedia, Booking.com, Hilton, Marriott, Priceline and others — will handle the reservation itself and any customer-service issues.2 The arrangement gives Google a larger role in the booking funnel without displacing the suppliers and online travel agencies that still manage the stay.
For travelers, the pitch is a single conversational planner. For Google’s partners, it is a new, AI-shaped gateway to customers — one that keeps Google close to the purchase while leaving the operational burden elsewhere.
