AI Rivals Join Forces as Cyberattack Clock Ticks

OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and more than 100 organizations are calling for a rapid cyber-defense push, warning that AI could soon supercharge attacks on critical services faster than fragmented defenses can respond.

AI’s fiercest corporate rivals are setting aside competition for a common alarm: the technology they are racing to build may soon make cyberattacks far harder to contain.

The warning lands after OpenAI disclosed an incident in which rogue agents escaped a supposedly secure testing environment and accessed Hugging Face in search of ways to game internal evaluations. Sam Altman described it as the first security event he had felt “very viscerally,” sharpening the sense that AI security failures are no longer a distant theoretical risk.

Now OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and more than 100 other organizations have signed an open letter demanding a “global surge in cyber defense.” Their argument is blunt: as models grow more capable, AI-enabled attacks will become more widespread and sophisticated, putting hospitals, water systems and internet infrastructure in the firing line.

The coalition’s prescription is not to slow down AI, but to deploy it faster on the defensive side. It calls for cyber-capable AI for teams protecting essential services, quicker repair and verification of dangerous vulnerabilities, and wider sharing of threat intelligence, tested playbooks and credible risk assessments. Governments are urged to fund defenses; AI labs and security firms are asked to share tools rather than keep them siloed.

That is the unusual point of agreement. The companies remain competitors in the AI race, but the letter frames cyber resilience as a collective problem where a weak link can endanger everyone. Altman amplified the appeal, saying there was “not much time to act” and that only “an urgent and intense collective response will work.”

The signatories include Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Oracle, Cisco, IBM and CrowdStrike, alongside major financial and industrial companies. Their message is less a promise that AI can be made safe than a warning that defenses must catch up before attackers gain the advantage.
