China’s Robot Sprinters Beat the Clock but Still Can’t Brake Safely
China’s humanoid runners are posting startling 100-meter times at Beijing’s robot games, even surpassing the fastest human benchmark. The spectacle, however, has also exposed a stubborn flaw: speed is arriving faster than safe stopping.
China’s humanoid sprinters are turning a Beijing technology showcase into a race against the human record. Yet their fastest runs are also revealing a more basic problem: a machine that can accelerate is not necessarily one that can stop.
At the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, Chinese robots have been “breaking human athletic records,” including in the 100-meter sprint.1 The competition, now in its second year, has placed racing alongside soccer and boxing in an Olympic-style test bed for humanoid machines.
The headline moment came Tuesday, when a Chinese humanoid logged 8.86 seconds over 100 meters — a time reported as faster than the fastest recorded human mark. The race was framed not simply as a sporting novelty, but as a demonstration of China’s rapidly advancing robotics sector amid its sharpening technology rivalry with the United States.2
The rush to celebrate speed has been matched by unease over control. Elon Musk amplified a post about Honor’s humanoid robot, Lightning, which was said to have run 100 meters in 9.32 seconds. The post’s more telling observation was that it “crashed into a safety wall” but avoided a catastrophic failure, with sparks flying from the robot.

By Wednesday, another robot sprinter had broken a 100-meter record as the five-day event closed, following competitions involving more than 2,000 humanoid robots.4 The Games have made China’s progress impossible to miss. They have also made clear that the next benchmark may be less about shaving tenths off a sprint and more about ending one without hitting the wall.
