Rockstar Sells GTA VI’s Vice City Like a Movie First
Rockstar’s nearly 27-minute GTA VI preview has expanded from Netflix to YouTube and its website, foregrounding Lucia and Jason’s cinematic Vice City story while saving most gameplay detail for elsewhere ahead of the November 19 release.
Rockstar’s latest Grand Theft Auto VI showcase is selling a mood before it sells mechanics. Its nearly 27-minute preview treats Vice City less like a sandbox to be explained than a crime epic to be watched.
The extended look first premiered on Netflix at 3PM ET, an unconventional launchpad for one of gaming’s biggest forthcoming releases. Rockstar then published the official video on YouTube and its own site, widening access after creators were allowed to post reaction videos.1
Chronologically, the footage begins by setting up Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos as partners navigating Vice City, then cuts between robberies, gunfights, police pursuits and quieter exchanges in cars. The editing deliberately hops among scenes, characters and storylines rather than offering the uninterrupted gameplay walkthrough typical of a deep-dive preview. One assessment called it “slices of a movie than a video game trailer.”1
That does not mean Rockstar has abandoned the game beneath the spectacle. Brief playable sequences show shootouts, police-car chases, basketball and scuba diving, while separate hands-on reports point to an expansive map, reactive NPCs, a six-star Wanted system and more demanding car thefts.2 The contrast is the point: the preview builds emotional stakes and a sense of place, while the finer mechanical pitch is left to outside coverage.
For Rockstar, the cinematic gamble comes with formidable expectations. GTA V has sold more than 230 million copies, and the series’ next chapter arrives November 19 at a starting price of $79.99.2 The message from Vice City is clear: come for the spectacle now; discover the sandbox later.
