OpenAI casts the break with Cursor as a safety and contract-enforcement decision after its acquisition by SpaceX; Musk’s camp is celebrating the startup’s new home, while Anthropic is positioning Claude as a continuing alternative for Cursor users.

The rupture comes after nearly four years in which OpenAI supplied models to Cursor, a coding-tool maker with a large developer following. Once SpaceX acquired the company, OpenAI said its change-of-control clause gave it a limited window to cancel the arrangement — and that it would use it.

OpenAI said it notified SpaceX that it intends to wind down the contract, setting November 12, 2026 as the proposed shutoff date.
