Nvidia’s $12.93B Hugging Face Bet Puts Open AI in Its Orbit
Nvidia says its purchase of Hugging Face will give open-source AI the resources to scale without sacrificing neutrality. Supporters see a boost for developers; skeptics see the chip giant gaining a powerful new grip on the AI stack.
Nvidia and Hugging Face cast their $12.93 billion union as a way to scale open AI without locking developers into one vendor. The central test is whether the world’s dominant AI chipmaker can own the community’s biggest open-model hub while preserving its independence.
The deal followed weeks of speculation, including reports in late August that Hugging Face was exploring a roughly $13 billion sale and that Nvidia was in talks. On Thursday, Nvidia confirmed the acquisition of the 2016-founded platform, which hosts models, datasets and tools shared by a vast developer community.1
Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue said he had approached Jensen Huang during the summer, after deciding open-source AI had reached a turning point and needed “more resources, more scale, more visibility.”2 Nvidia’s promise is unusually explicit: developers will retain their choice of models, frameworks, clouds, inference providers and computing platforms; “Nvidia compute will not be required” to build or deploy through Hugging Face.1
Huang argues that open models improve safety, cybersecurity, innovation and technological sovereignty — a message he amplified publicly on X.
3 Delangue’s ambition is equally expansive: with Nvidia’s backing, he says the platform can plan for the next decade and grow from 18 million AI builders to 100 million.2
Yet the acquisition also gives Nvidia a strategic perch above the chips that made it rich. Analysts say the company can broaden its customer base and gain valuable intelligence on the models, datasets and architectures gaining traction. The unanswered question is whether hardware rivals and developers will trust a Nvidia-owned repository to remain genuinely neutral.4
For now, major partners are publicly buying Nvidia’s version of the future. Google CEO Sundar Pichai, whose company invested in Hugging Face, said the deal would “strengthen the open model ecosystem.”
5 The celebration is broad; the scrutiny will be over whether openness survives ownership.
