Kalanick’s Robotaxi Return Reopens Uber’s Unfinished Business

Kalanick’s supporters see a heavily financed second attempt at autonomous driving; the shadow over it is that the first effort ended alongside a scandal-ridden tenure at Uber, leaving the industry’s hardest problems unresolved.

Earlier this summer, Travis Kalanick’s startup Atoms disclosed a $1.7 billion financing round led by Andreessen Horowitz, yet offered few specifics about what the Uber co-founder intended to build. The scale of the raise, however, quickly invited a familiar reading: Kalanick was not done with autonomous vehicles.

That interpretation gained force as reports described a venture under the working name Codex seeking to re-enter the self-driving taxi market. Kalanick has called the effort “unfinished business” — a pointed callback to Uber’s abandoned autonomous-driving campaign.

The renewed push comes after Kalanick stepped down as Uber chief executive in 2017 following a string of scandals. His original self-driving ambitions had been central to Uber’s attempt to control the future of ride-hailing, but the program became entangled in legal and operational turmoil. The new effort assumes those old technical and commercial obstacles can now be overcome, even as Waymo, Cruise and Aurora have poured years of investment into the field.

More recently, the Financial Times reported that Atoms was preparing to hire and pursue acquisitions that could turn it into a significant autonomous-vehicle player. It has reportedly discussed with Uber how the ride-hailing company might deploy its robotaxi technology; Uber has also invested $100 million in Atoms.

There are signs this is more than a branding exercise. Atoms acquired Pronto, an autonomous-mining company led by Anthony Levandowski, Uber’s former self-driving chief. Yet sources cautioned that robotaxis are not the whole plan. For Kalanick, that creates the central tension: a return to the technology he once bet Uber’s future on, but through a startup that must prove it has learned from the first collapse.
