Isar’s Orbital Breakthrough Gives Europe a New Rocket Challenger
Isar Aerospace sees its successful Spectrum flight as proof that Europe can build a commercially driven route to space, while European leaders view it as a strategic answer to reliance on foreign launch providers. The shared optimism now rests on whether the startup can scale fast enough to meet demand.
Saturday’s flight from Andøya Spaceport in northern Norway marked a sharp reversal for Munich-based Isar Aerospace. Its first Spectrum test, in March 2025, spun out of control and crashed less than 20 seconds after liftoff; engineers traced the failure to an unintended vent-valve opening and loss of attitude control.1
On its second attempt, the 28-metre, two-stage rocket lifted off at 20:12 UTC and reached low-Earth orbit roughly seven minutes later, deploying its payloads. Spectrum became the first fully commercial launch vehicle developed in Europe to reach orbit — and the first rocket built predominantly in Germany to do so.1
For Isar co-founder and chief executive Daniel Metzler, the result is more than a technical recovery. “Today, Isar Aerospace opened space from continental Europe,” he said, arguing that launch remains the industry’s largest bottleneck and that the company offers customers a genuine alternative.1 He cast the milestone as a test of European strategic autonomy, particularly when launching with SpaceX may be cheaper but politically fraught.
European officials echoed that sovereignty argument. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called the launch “the beginning of a new era,” while EU defence and space commissioner Andrius Kubilius said Europe’s independent access to space had received “a major boost.”2
The commercial case, however, is the next proving ground. Chief commercial officer Stella Guillen said the sector is “desperate” for added launch capacity and that Isar has an order pipeline exceeding €10 billion, though the company did not specify how much is contracted.2 Backed by roughly $1 billion raised over eight years and employing nearly 500 people, Isar is now focused on industrialisation: not merely another successful test, but a launch cadence measured in hundreds of rockets.1
That ambition would challenge Europe’s legacy, subsidy-supported providers and offer a homegrown competitor in a market still dominated by SpaceX. Orbit was the breakthrough; repeatability is the real contest.
