Lake Mariner Fire Exposes Who Is Answerable for AI’s $3.2 Billion Bet
Somerset residents and firefighters see a high-stakes project that has outpaced clear safety assurances, while TeraWulf says it owns emergency preparedness and has moved to address gaps. The dispute also reaches beyond the blaze: who bears the cost—and verifies the promises—of the AI buildout?
In early June, firefighters entered an unfinished Lake Mariner building in Somerset, New York, confronting heavy chemical smoke with reportedly no working alarm or suppression system, three dry hydrants, and missing safety documentation. Barker Fire Department Chief Steve Matisz said his crew went in “kind of blind.”1
No one was injured and construction continued, but the fire put a harsh spotlight on the $3.2 billion campus’s tangled chain of responsibility. TeraWulf owns and operates the site; Fluidstack is to run it; Google backs Fluidstack’s lease and holds warrants for a future stake; Anthropic is among the intended compute customers.
TeraWulf said it is responsible for “operational safety and emergency preparedness,” including required systems and coordination with first responders. Its chief strategy officer, Kerri Langlais, said an after-action review led to Knox boxes, additional hydrants and safety-data-sheet “go-bags.” Yet by mid-August, Matisz said the hydrants were still dry: “I haven’t seen work done on them.”1
The questions soon widened from fire readiness to Somerset’s return on the project. A 2024 presentation projected 35 to 40 jobs at a facility that could draw 500 megawatts—far below the 165 permanent jobs cited in a 2019 application for a power discount. Governor Kathy Hochul has called out that broader mismatch, saying data centers “do not deliver significant, long-term jobs.”1
Residents also report a constant industrial hum, while energy claims have become less definite: TeraWulf’s earlier description of 95% “zero-carbon” power shifted toward “low-carbon” language. Langlais said the figures reflect the regional grid mix, rather than power bought from a dedicated clean source.1
Anthropic’s 2026 commitment covers consumer electricity-price impacts, including grid infrastructure costs, and applies to Lake Mariner. But it does not resolve who verifies noise, clean-energy or safety promises at a leased site. The fire left the central problem intact: in the AI boom’s corporate web, accountability can be the hardest system to locate.1
