Earlier this month, Meta introduced Muse, a personal AI assistant designed to handle tasks such as sending emails and booking travel. The company is now trying to convert that consumer-facing momentum into a corporate business, building an enterprise offering around Muse and related developer tools.¹

The company put Chirantan “CJ” Desai, then MongoDB’s chief executive, in charge. Desai cast the plan as a broader change in how companies operate: “Over the coming years, AI will fundamentally redefine how organizations of all sizes innovate, grow, serve customers, and run business operations.” He argued Meta can combine advanced models and agents with its record of helping advertisers and businesses scale.¹

But the announcement carried a conspicuous cost for MongoDB. Its shares fell more than 17% after Desai’s sudden departure, an investor rebuke that underscored the uncertainty around the database company’s leadership transition. MongoDB named former chief executive Dev Ittycheria as interim CEO while its board searches for a permanent replacement.¹ Meta has gained a leader for its enterprise AI gamble; MongoDB has inherited the consequences of losing one.
