Meta’s Enterprise AI Push Poaches MongoDB’s CEO and Shakes Its Old Employer
Meta sees its consumer-scale AI reach as a route into corporate software, while MongoDB’s investors saw the abrupt loss of its chief executive as an immediate disruption. CJ Desai now carries the task of proving Meta can turn a vast AI investment into a business staple.
Meta has spent years building AI for consumers, advertisers and creators. Now it is making a direct play for the enterprise market — and doing so with a high-profile hire from a company suddenly left to manage the fallout.
On Monday, Meta unveiled the Meta Enterprise Platform, positioning it as a way to bring its broader AI stack to companies and developers. Mark Zuckerberg called the initiative “the next major pillar of our business,” arguing that AI will create “significant new opportunities” for people and businesses.

The company named Chirantan “CJ” Desai, then MongoDB’s CEO, as chief enterprise platform officer, reporting directly to Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg praised Desai as an enterprise leader with experience delivering results in “AI, infrastructure” and full-stack software.
2 Meta’s initial package will include its Muse assistant, Meta Business Agent, Muse API and Muse Code.3
Desai cast the move as a chance to turn Meta’s technical reach into workplace products. “Over the coming years, AI will fundamentally redefine how organizations of all sizes innovate, grow, serve customers, and run business operations,” he said, arguing Meta can combine advanced models and agents with its experience serving millions of advertisers and hundreds of millions of businesses.3
For MongoDB, however, the announcement landed as a leadership shock. Its shares dropped more than 17% after Desai’s sudden departure, and the database company installed former chief executive Dev Ittycheria as interim CEO while it searches for a permanent replacement.3
On Tuesday, Meta extended the commercial pitch with Muse for Small Businesses. Rather than releasing a separate business app, it is adding connectors for tools including Asana, QuickBooks, Shopify, Slack, Stripe and Zoom. Meta says the agent can analyze sales and campaigns, help plan growth, manage inventory and cash flow, and draft customer communications.4
Meta VP of AI products Vishal Shah said roughly a third of early Muse users already connect a business account: “People are using Muse to run their business.”4 The central question is whether that early behavior can become a durable enterprise business — fast enough to justify Meta’s AI spending, and big enough to validate MongoDB’s painful loss.
