Anthropic Bets AI’s Real Edge Is Building, Not Just Buying
Anthropic is pitching AI adoption as a two-front race: startups need affordable access and close support to build new products, while large companies need deeply trained engineers to move beyond pilots. In both cases, the company argues that the decisive advantage lies in deployment, not merely possession of a model.
Anthropic first widened its appeal to younger companies on Tuesday, expanding its Claude for Startups program during SF Tech Week. Qualifying firms can receive a free year of Claude Team with up to five premium seats, $1,000 in API credits, access to Claude Marketplace and virtual office hours with the company’s Applied AI team.1
The offer targets companies founded within the past five years or funded in the past two. Anthropic framed the move as more than a customer-acquisition push: “the benefits of AI will reach most people through the companies that build on top of models, rather than through the models alone.”1 That is a clear bet on founders as the route by which frontier models become useful products.
Anthropic then took the same argument into the enterprise, announcing the Claude Frontier Academy and a $100 million commitment to train 10,000 Frontier Deployed Engineers by the end of 2027.2 Its first residency cohorts include engineers from Accenture, Bain, Capgemini, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Deloitte, McKinsey, Morgan Stanley and Novo Nordisk, and are running in San Francisco, New York and London.2
The enterprise program is deliberately practical: nominees arrive with a Claude project, complete a simulated deployment and then lead a real 12-week use case at their employer. Anthropic says the scarcity is not simply access to AI, but people able to take it through security review, adoption and production.
Steve Corfield, Anthropic’s global head of business development and partnerships, argued that “a small team of high-agency people” with the right skills and business knowledge “can transform an entire company.”2 Startups get runway; enterprises get a deployment corps. Anthropic’s common message is blunt: the winners will be those who can make AI work in the real world.
