No Man’s Sky Shrinks to iPhone, but Leaves Multiplayer Behind

Hello Games is presenting its iOS port as the full-scale culmination of No Man’s Sky’s long redemption story, while acknowledging that the mobile version still draws a hard line around multiplayer and some settlement features.

A decade after its troubled debut, No Man’s Sky is preparing for perhaps its most improbable landing yet: iPhone and iPad. Hello Games says the space-exploration phenomenon will arrive on iOS on October 28, extending a game once defined by disappointment into another major platform launch.

The mobile release is not being pitched as a cut-down companion app. Sean Murray, Hello Games’ founder, called it “not No Man’s Sky Lite,” saying it includes the long run of updates and expansions that transformed the original release over the years. That includes the systems and content underpinning the game’s now-familiar universe of procedurally generated worlds.

There are, however, notable boundaries. Multiplayer will not be available on any iOS device, while player-built planetary settlements are restricted to iPhone 15 Pro models and later. The compromise resembles the game’s original Switch release, Murray said, and the studio will judge future iOS support by player feedback and audience size.

The port will run on iPhone 11 models and newer, as well as third-generation iPad Air devices and later. Hello Games has designed touch controls while retaining controller support and TV casting; iPad players can also use a mouse and keyboard. Murray said the team had devoted major effort to “battery life and thermodynamics,” aiming for long, comfortable sessions rather than a technical novelty.

After three years of work, the game will launch as a free trial with a $19.99 full purchase, weighing in at under 5GB. For a game built around millions of generated planets, that small download is part of the point: the galaxy is created as players travel through it, not packed into the phone beforehand.
