Apple’s iPhone Duo Sellout Raises a Bigger Question: Demand or Scarcity?
Apple sees extraordinary interest in its first foldable iPhone, while analysts view the early sellout as both a vote for Apple’s premium brand and a reminder that scarcity can make a luxury launch look even hotter.
Apple opened iPhone Duo preorders at 8 a.m. ET on Friday, betting that its first foldable handset could create a new premium tier above the Pro and Pro Max. The $1,999 device, available in “star white” and “night sky,” is Apple’s biggest iPhone redesign in years.1
Within an hour, online delivery estimates had slipped into next year; by the time of reporting, every configuration on Apple’s site showed late-January delivery. The Duo is due in stores on October 23, where Apple may still have inventory reserved for walk-in buyers.1
Launch-day pickup stock also sold out. Apple called preorder demand “nothing short of extraordinary” and said it was working to get the product to customers “as quickly as possible.”2
The company’s interpretation is straightforward: a loyal customer base is willing to pay sharply more for a fresh form factor. At the top end, a 2TB Duo costs more than $3,000, turning the phone into an explicit test of Apple’s status-symbol power rather than a mass-market volume play.2
Analysts broadly agree that the device could lift revenue even with modest unit sales. IDC’s Nabila Popal called it “an aspirational foldable,” arguing that Apple’s ecosystem—not novel technology—gives the device its edge. Foldables are projected to account for only a little over 2% of global smartphone units this year, but nearly 7% of industry revenue.2
But the sellout does not settle the demand question. Counterpoint expects roughly 6 million or fewer units to be available near term, while IDC also anticipates early supply constraints because of manufacturing complexity and Apple’s quality standards. “Exclusivity is part of the current appeal,” Popal said.2
That leaves Apple with a useful, if unresolved, early result: the Duo may be a durable new luxury engine—or a tightly supplied launch whose scarcity is helping sell the story.
