Airbnb Just Killed Checkout Chores—and Some Hosts Are Ready to Walk

Guests see Airbnb’s new checkout rules as overdue relief from doing chores on top of paying cleaning fees, while some hosts argue the platform is erasing the responsibilities that distinguish a private-home stay from a hotel visit.

The checkout fight has been building for years. Guests have repeatedly questioned why they should strip beds, wash dishes or haul away garbage after paying a separate cleaning fee—sometimes with fines attached for failing to follow instructions.

Airbnb began responding in 2023, when it said more than 260,000 hosts had reduced or eliminated cleaning fees. Scrutiny over price transparency continued through 2024, and in May 2025 the company began displaying total prices, excluding taxes, by default in worldwide search results.

Now Airbnb is going further. For reservations booked on or after November 20, hosts cannot require tasks that demand “significant effort or time, or would typically be performed by a cleaner.” Guests may be asked to place used dishes in the sink, gather towels, sort rubbish into indoor bins and switch off amenities when leaving. They cannot be told to wash and store dishes, strip beds, start laundry or take trash off-site.

The company will display requests more prominently in a new “rules and requests” section, and hosts cannot evade the policy by adding chores through messages or signs. Exceptions remain for practical or safety concerns, including conserving water during droughts and placing waste in animal-proof containers in bear country.

For frustrated travelers, the change makes Airbnb feel less like paying to clean someone else’s home. Some hosts, however, say sanitation, property protection and turnover costs cannot simply disappear.

One longtime operator warned that Airbnb was drifting toward a hotel model: “Guests are given complete freedom to be lazy while the hosts bear the risk.” The host said removing reasonable responsibilities could prompt them to leave the platform after 12 years.

That leaves Airbnb attempting a delicate reset: giving guests a cleaner checkout while persuading hosts that the personal-home model can survive without the chore list.
