Amazon Wants Alexa to Run More of Your Shopping Life
Amazon is betting that shoppers will hand Alexa more of the routine work behind online purchases, while the scale of its existing use suggests the company sees the holiday season as a chance to make that habit stick.
Ahead of the holiday shopping rush, Amazon has expanded Alexa with more than 100 shopping-related actions, pushing the voice assistant deeper into the unglamorous but consequential mechanics of buying online.1
The new tools let customers create, view and edit shopping lists, including registering lists through Alexa. They can also alter recurring orders — for instance, moving a delivery from every month to every three months — without navigating Amazon’s usual menus.1
Amazon is also giving Alexa a role after the purchase. Users can update delivery instructions, change an address, add drop-off details, and ask questions about Prime or Audible subscriptions, billing and payment problems.1
The rollout follows a broader AI-shopping push this year, including a shopping assistant and notifications for new products and offers. Amazon says use of its agentic features has grown eightfold since the start of the year, while more than 400 million consumers have used Alexa for shopping over the past 12 months.1
The company’s pitch is convenience: fewer taps to manage routine orders and account issues. But the expansion also makes Alexa less of a tool for placing an occasional order and more of an intermediary for subscriptions, deliveries and payments — precisely as holiday spending puts those tasks under greater pressure.
