Claude Wants to Be Your Money Copilot, Not Your Banker

Anthropic is pitching Claude’s new finance hub as a neutral, read-only guide to everyday money questions, while acknowledging the unease that comes with giving an AI visibility into bank and card activity. Its answer is limited access through Plaid and a longer-term role alongside licensed financial professionals, rather than replacing them.

Anthropic on Thursday began rolling out Personal Finance, a beta feature that connects Claude to US users’ bank and credit-card accounts through Plaid. The tool is available to Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers and is intended to turn raw transactions into plain-English answers about spending, bills and affordability.

The immediate pitch is practical. Ask, “Where did my money go this month?” and Claude can total transactions across linked accounts, sort them into categories such as rent, food and shopping, then take follow-up questions on whether a bill is rising or a purchase fits the budget. It can also flag duplicate charges, unexpected fees and growing bills, Anthropic says.

But the launch also puts a familiar AI dilemma squarely on the table: usefulness depends on access to highly sensitive information. Claude cannot move, manage or invest money, and Anthropic says the Plaid connection is read-only. The company says Claude does not receive banking passwords, though it can view bank and account names, account types, last four digits, balances, credit limits and as much as two years of transaction history.

Anthropic argues its model is a financial explainer rather than a product salesman. “Personal Finance has no ads or sponsored recommendations, and it doesn’t offer credit cards, loans, or savings accounts of its own, so your money questions get a straight answer,” the company said. It also says chats within the finance hub will not be used to train its models.

The move follows OpenAI’s similar Plaid-linked ChatGPT offering, introduced in May, making Claude the latest chatbot to seek a place in users’ financial routines. Anthropic nevertheless draws a boundary around major decisions, saying people are “best served by Claude working alongside the licensed professionals and regulated firms they trust.”
