Instagram is betting that clearer disclosure—not a ban—is the answer to AI personas that users mistake for real people. The change targets deceptive profiles while leaving ordinary AI-assisted creative work largely untouched.

As AI influencers became harder to distinguish from humans, frustration grew across social platforms. Reports have documented networks of apparent AI personalities promoting services through Instagram, while AI-generated wellness accounts have also raised concerns over supplement pitches and health claims.¹

On Monday, Instagram said it would rename its existing “AI creator” marker as the more explicit “AI-generated profile.” The label is intended to tell users that the person at the centre of an account was generated or substantially created with AI—not merely that an image was edited or a caption polished with software.²

The platform framed the shift as a response to a familiar bait-and-switch: “We’ve heard that people don’t like seeing a profile that seems human, only to find out later that the person featured is AI-generated.”² Accounts featuring synthetic people that fail to disclose it can have their reach restricted, meaning posts will not be recommended to non-followers in Reels and Explore. Owners who believe they were wrongly flagged will be able to appeal.¹

Instagram’s line is deliberately narrow. Creators who apply the label will not be punished simply for using an AI-generated persona, and people using AI for graphics, photo edits or other creative tweaks do not need to label their accounts.² That distinction offers transparency for digital identities, but not the sweeping AI-content filter critics may want. As one account of the policy put it, users still cannot simply “filter out AI slop” from the platform.¹
